Job Summary The Outpatient Coding Auditor is responsible for performing an in-depth review of select outpatient medical records to ensure that the assigned codes are supported by clinical documentation and all diagnoses and procedures are coded with the required specificity. Responsible for mentoring and training other coders. Provide ongoing feedback and education to coding staff and Clinical Documentation Specialists. Responsible for researching new technology for accurate code assignment. Perform documentation assessment and review for accurate abstracting of clinical data to meet regulatory and compliance requirements. Assist management with assigned special projects.
Performs quality reviews of coded outpatient encounters to validate the assigned codes. Provides ongoing individual feedback to the coder.
Mentors new coders and cross trains other coders.
Assign and sequence ICD-9-CM/CPT-4 diagnostics and procedural codes for designated patient types which may include observation and emergency room records for billing and reimbursement.
Assist Patient Financial Services with interpretation and selection of appropriate ICD-9-CM or CPT-4 codes and /or other information requested for accurate billing and reimbursement. Possess knowledge and understanding of failed bill parameters. Effective use of software to obtain patient data (lab, radiology, pathology, transcription) and to charge Emergency Room acuity level. Compiles monthly accuracy reports and distribute individual accuracy statistics to the outpatient coders.
Maintains and updates hospital outpatient coding guidelines to reflect current practices and ensures compliance with applicable laws, rules, and regulations.
Participates in monthly Clinical Documentation Improvement Team meetings. Supports and provides education to the Clinical Documentation Specialists.
Participates in continuing education activities to enhance knowledge, skills and keep credentials current.
